THE INSPIRATION
A lawyer asks Jesus who counts as a neighbour, hoping for a short list. He gets a story instead. Two men with every religious reason to help walk past. The one who stops is the one the lawyer would have crossed the road to avoid. Notice how much the Samaritan actually does. He binds the wounds, gives up his own animal, pays the innkeeper and promises to come back and settle the rest. Mercy in this parable is not a feeling. It costs him the whole day and most of his money.
